BEHOLD THE GLORY
For the Roman rulers of Judea, Jesus Christ was an enigmatic figure. Although he never criticized the Romans or denounced their rule, his widespread popularity and their ignorance of his mission on earth made his activity in Judea and Galilee an object of concern to the Roman authorities. Still, in the absence of any overt challenge to Roman rule, they did not hinder Jesus as he traveled and preached throughout the region.

Caiaphas and the high priests, were aware of the Roman concern about Jesus’ popularity and consistently tried to portray him as a dangerous rebel and political extremist. They also repeatedly tried to trick Jesus into making statements that would cause him to be arrested by the Roman authorities. On one occasion, they asked Jesus whether it was proper to pay taxes to Caesar Augustus, the Roman emperor. They hoped to trap him into making a statement that the Romans would view as subversive, but Jesus deftly avoided the trick replying that, “render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God’s.”

In “Behold the Glory,” a Roman centurion present at the crucifixion relates the last days of Christ from the standpoint of the Roman authorities in Judea. Beginning with the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, the crucifixion, and finally the resurrection, Christ’s message of hope and salvation is explained and shared with the world.
